Gove launches plan to ban plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds

The government has launched a consultation on its plan to ban the distribution and sale of plastic straws, drinks stirrers and cotton buds to protect rivers and seas.

It is estimated that in England, 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds are use annually, with an estimated 10% of cotton buds flushed down toilets, ending up in waterways and oceans.
