United Utilities granted new permit to handle 6Mt of Liverpool wastewater

The Environment Agency (EA) has granted United Utilities an environmental permit to significantly increase the amount of wastewater it handles at its Liverpool site by more than 6 million tonnes.

The EA granted the 6.2 million wet tonnes increase yesterday alongside the replacement of two existing combined heat and power gas engines.

As part of a £200m extension to the Liverpool Waste Water Treatment in 2016, United Utilities took on new capacity to deal with 960 megalitres per day, serving a new catchment of 600,000 people.
