No inquiry into grouse moor management, says DEFRA

DEFRA will not support the opening of an independent inquiry into the sustainability and legality of grouse moor management in England, environment minister Thérèse Coffey stated on Thursday.

The statement was made in response to a written parliamentary question posed on Monday by Labour MP for York Central Rachael Maskell. Coffey replied to it with a simple “No”.

Maskell has previously spoken in parliament in favour of banning driven grouse shooting, citing the environmental and health threat of lead shot, the need to prevent illegal persecution of raptors and the risk of flooding, which can be exacerbated by upland peat bog burning.
