New coal mine faces private prosecution over newts

The UK’s newest coal mine is facing legal action over the handling of protected great crested newts.

Lawyers for the Campaign to Protect Pont Valley allege that the Banks Group is deliberately disturbing the species and destroying its habitat at its Bradley mine in Pont Valley, County Durham. Doing so constitutes an offence under regulation 43 (1) of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.
