What Wessex Water’s record £1m enforcement undertaking means for future penalties

Wessex Water has paid out more than £1m following a series of unpermitted discharges of sewage effluent from its Swanage Bay treatment works. Gareth Simkins looks into the payout’s implications

The £975,000 donation paid out recently by Wessex Water set a new high for a civil sanction payout. The sum, 50% more than the previous record, came on top of a £25,000 compensation payment and undisclosed costs paid to the Environment Agency (EA).
