Tesco fined £8m for major petrol spill

The UK’s largest supermarket chain has been prosecuted for a major petrol spill in Lancashire that killed many fish

For the environmental effects of the spill Tesco was fined £3m. Photograph: Environment AgencyTesco has been ordered to pay £8m for allowing more than 20,000 litres of petrol to escape into sewage systems and waterways in Lancashire.

The retail giant was sentenced at Preston Crown Court on 15 June having pleaded guilty to breaching environment and health and safety laws at Burnley Crown Court last September.
