Southern Water challenges abstraction licence change

The Environment Agency’s attempt to make Southern Water cut back abstractions from the river Itchen with immediate effect is being challenged

The river Itchen. Photograph: Leimenide/FlickrSouthern Water is fighting the Environment Agency’s (EA) attempts to make it cut back chalk stream abstractions immediately, saying it needs more time to make the changes.

The EA first notified Southern Water about the need to reduce abstractions from the river Itchen in 2012. In 2015 the water company applied to complete the changes by 2018, in line with its water resource management plan (WRMP) published in 2014.
