There’s an element of luck. I’ve always cared about the environment. I was influenced by books like Blueprint for Survival and Small is Beautiful when I was at school, and I’ve belonged to various environmental and conservation groups since I was at university. But the first 20 years of my working life was spent in politics and the co-operative movement, culminating in five years running ABCUL, the credit union trade association.
