EA grants Ineos second shale gas exploration permit

Ineos has been granted a shale exploration permit, without being required to carry out an EIA, for the second time in a month

The permit allows Ineos to drill for rock samples but does not allow it to frack.Photograph: Jeff Buck/geograph.org.ukThe Environment Agency (EA) has granted Ineos an environmental permit to drill an exploratory borehole at a site in South Yorkshire.

The chemicals firm, which was granted a standard rules permit on 18 July, had not been required to carry out an environmental impact assessment (EIA) as part of the previous planning permission process.
