Mapped: Cost of waste crime rises as North East falls victim to illegal dumps

North-east England has been lumped with a bill for three quarters of a million pounds in clear up costs of illegal waste, regulator confirms

The EA's investigation is ongoing. Photograph: Environment AgencyThe Environment Agency (EA) has estimated cleanup costs of up to £750,000 have been created by illegally dumped waste in north-east England.

The significant figure relates to eleven separate illegal waste dumps across the EA’s north-east jurisdiction between 30 August 2016 and 20 March 2017. While the costs are high, the environmental regulator said on 27 September that they could be even higher if it turns out that land has been contaminated or insurance premiums rise.
