Policies vital as solar PV looms over renewables landscape

The IEA has revised its growth forecasts for renewable energy due to an unforeseen swell of solar PV globally but predicts wind will dominate in UK

Photograph: Jacqueline Bttcher/123RFThe International Energy Agency (IEA) has boosted its global outlook for renewable energy generation with electricity capacity predicted to expand by 43%, or 920 gigawatts, within the next five years.

Contained within its 2017-22 electricity forecast report, published on 4 October, the IEA has revised worldwide net renewables growth capacity significantly with a 12% increase on last year.
