UK 'nowhere near' meeting Chinese recyclate quality demands

Recycling exports could be disrupted by more demanding Chinese rules. Photograph: PixabayResource charity WRAP has warned of significant upheaval to the UK’s waste and resource sector if China goes ahead with proposed restrictions on the quality of material it imports for recycling.

In July, China announced its intention to ban 24 kinds of solid waste by the end of 2017. The list of restricted wastes includes some types of scrap plastics, mixed paper, waste wool, ash, cotton and yarn. In August, the Chinese government said that it would limit the permitted level of contamination of all imported recycled materials to a maximum of 0.3%.
