Brussels fishes for deal as 10-year glyphosate proposal shelved

Fresh from an advisory vote to ban glyphosate in the European Parliament, the European Commission tried its luck with member states to get the controversial herbicide reapproved

Photograph: David Martyn Hughes/123RFThe European Commission (EC) has shelved its proposal to extend the EU permit for glyphosate by ten years after it became clear that it would not garner sufficient backing from national government delegates.

It follows one day after the vote on 24 October by MEPs for a full phase-out of glyphosate within five years.
