UK sediment control needs more up-to-date guidance

Good practice pointers on how to assess and manage the risks of contaminated sediments in the UK are in short supply, but upcoming guidance intends to address the information gap

Joanne Kwan, project manager, CIRIASediments take on multiple roles in the environment. They carry contaminants, are a habitat or a resource, or a mix of the three. Contamination can come from sources ranging from historical discharges or spillages from industrial activities along the coast into rivers or canals. It could also be in materials from land remediation projects, rainwater run-off from contaminated or agricultural land or other non-point sources and may be present in anything from mining activities to offshore oil and gas drill cutting piles on the seabed.
