Natural capital approach ‘does not justify’ government retreat from regulation

Traditional approaches to nature conservation and newer natural capital thinking are complementary, says Green Alliance

The use of natural capital accounting does not justify government attempts to retreat from environmental regulation, according to Green Alliance.

In a report comparing traditional conservation and newer natural capital approaches, published on 25 January, the thinktank says there will be a continued need for a regulatory framework for nature as environmental threats to it rise.

Green Alliance notes that environmental protection has been managed over decades through a system of regulations, designations and incentive payments, alongside land purchase by conservation organisations.
