GB's first battery storage frequency response service launches

A new 20MW rapid frequency response service to address grid fluctuations will be the first to use battery storage in Great Britain.

The RES battery storage system is the first to provide fast frequency response in the UK. Courtesy of RESGreat Britain's first sub-second frequency response service based on electricity storage in batteries has launched following a collaborative deal between National Grid and UK-based renewable energy and energy storage supplier RES.

The service, launched on 24 May, aims to address energy security risks from frequency changes in a power sector increasingly exposed to tight capacity margins and low-carbon but intermittent renewable generation.
