There are significant job opportunities in the flood risk industry, according to research carried out by recruitment firm Matchtech and the Chartered Institution for Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).
A survey of more than 830 UK engineers and employers found flood risk engineering had the largest shortfall of skills in the water industry.
Respondents also said that the sector was experiencing the highest skills shortage in 5-10 years.
Some 81% of employers have seen increased employee turnover and 70% said that it had resulted in a reduced ability to finish projects.
Shirel Stedman, managing director of CIWEM, said engineers and employers in the water industry were fearful for the future of the sector.
“Extreme weather and rising sea levels, related to climate change, are likely to increase the risk of flooding and it is vital that we address the current skills gap within the UK,” she added.
According to the respondents, training and collaboration with universities were key solutions to helping fill the skills gap. But 52% of employers said that skilled workers should be sourced from overseas.
The survey also suggested that skills from the energy, maritime and highways industries would be transferable to the water and environment sector.
