Former DEFRA advisor appointed to Natural England board

An agricultural specialist with a wealth of environmental experience has been appointed to NE’s board

Winter is a rural policy specialist and social scientistNatural England (NE) has appointed Professor Michael Winter to its board.

Winter, who will take up his three-year role from 1 September, is a rural policy specialist and social scientist.

He is currently professor of land economy and society and a director of the Land, Environment, Economics and Policy Institute at the University of Exeter. He is also a director of the Food Security & Land Research Alliance, which is active at a number of universities in the UK.

In addition, Winter co-directs the DEFRA-funded Sustainable Intensification Research Platform and chairs the UNESCO North Devon Biosphere Partnership.

Previously, Winter sat on DEFRA’s Science Advisory Council and the Commission for Rural Communities.

Set up in 2006, NE’s remit is to ensure the natural environment is “conserved, enhanced and managed for the benefit of present and future generations”.

Despite this, recently leaked documents show  the regulator no longer aspires to “lead the conservation sector” due to financial constraints (endsreport.com/53567).
