Multi-million pound ecosystems services market proposed

The National Trust and think tank Green Alliance want to see payments for ecosystems services markets created to raise money for farmers, reduce subsidies and improve nature

Photograph: Matthew Dixon/123RFFarmers could receive millions of pounds towards farming methods that reduce flooding, provide clean water and restore wildlife, according to a report from think tank Green Alliance and the National Trust.

The report, published on 28 September, sets out a payments for ecosystems services (PES) modelĀ  in which groups of farmers sell services such as flood protection and clean water to water companies and other beneficiaries downstream.
