Study shows diesel emissions controls hitting fuel efficiency

The introduction of the Euro 6 emissions standard has had the perverse effect of increasing CO2 emissions from new diesel cars

The 2016 VW Tiguan has particularly low NOx emissions, according to Emissions AnalyticsA tighter limit on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted from diesels has come at the cost of CO2, the results from real-world emissions monitoring have proven.

According to Emissions Analytics, the average fuel economy of the 1,200 cars studied peaked at 49 miles per gallon (mpg) in 2014, during which the Euro 6 emissions standard entered force for new models. The commercial testing firm uses portable emissions monitoring devices to ascertain how much vehicles pollute outside laboratory conditions.
