Colin ChurchColin Church left his post as director of environmental quality at DEFRA to become chief executive of CIWM in October. Here he reminisces on more than 20 years in the civil service and reveals what he hopes to achieve at the trade association.

What skills have helped the most to get where you are in your career?

In all the areas I have worked in, we have been breaking new ground, from setting the fourth UK carbon budget, to negotiating the revision of the EU chemicals regime (REACH) and developing the Better Regulation framework. This has required a range of skills, from people and leadership skills through to strategic, critical and innovative thinking. The ability to get to grips with lots of technical information, translate it into policy direction and communicate it to a wide range of audiences has also been essential.
