Skip hire boss escapes jail for waste offences

A Manchester company director was taken to court after storing ten times more waste than his permit allowed and ignoring an enforcement notice

Knox stored waste 10 times above his permit limit. Photograph: Environment AgencyThe director of a Manchester skip hire firm has been given a suspended prison sentenced for storing ten times more waste than he was allowed and failing to comply with Environment Agency (EA) orders.

Thomas Knox of UK Skip Hire Ltd was sentenced on 9 December at Manchester Crown Court to 14 months in jail, suspended for two years. He had already pleaded guilty to breaching the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. No order for costs was made.
