Government admits ‘step change in effort’ needed to meet own CO2 targets

Several major departments, including DECC, increased their CO2 emissions during 2012/13. But better progress is being made on cutting water use and waste

It is “clear that a step change in effort is needed” if the government is to meet its own CO2 target for 2015, the Cabinet Office has admitted.

Since 2009/10, the government has cut emissions across its estate by 14%. But that level needs to increase to 25% by April 2015 – something that will be extremely challenging.

The Cabinet Office makes the admission in a progress report on the government’s sustainability targets, which was published just before Christmas.
