‘Where will axe fall?’, MPs ask DEFRA

DEFRA’s list of departmental priorities fails to show how it will cope with massive budget cuts, MPs say. Morale in the department has hit rock bottom.

Owen Paterson’s strategic priorities for DEFRA are unclear, making it hard to see where budget cuts will be felt most, MPs have said.

Paterson has set rural economic growth, improving the environment and protecting plant and animal health as DEFRA’s priorities for the next year.

These might be short and memorable but they lack specificity, according to a 7 January report from the House of Commons Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee.
