Biodegradable bag exemption ‘complete surprise’ to plastics industry

The government’s plan to exempt biodegradable bags from the shopping bag charge for England came out of the blue, industry representatives have told MPs

Industry opinion is deeply divided over the merits of the government’s plan to exempt biodegradable bags from its carrier bag charge for England.

Plastic industry experts expressed surprise and bafflement at the move during a House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) hearing on 9 January.

The committee is holding an inquiry into the environmental impacts of the government’s plan to charge five pence for plastic carrier bags in England from 2015.
