Deregulation Bill laid before parliament

A bill giving environmental regulators a new economic growth duty has been laid before parliament

A bill that gives environmental regulators a duty to support economic growth has moved a step closer to being enacted.

The Deregulation Bill was formally laid before parliament on 23 January, following several months of scrutiny.

The wide-ranging ‘portmanteau’ bill introduces, among other things, a duty for non-economic regulators such as the Environment Agency and Natural England to support economic growth.

In evidence sessions on the draft bill, a joint committee of MPs and peers heard that this provision lacked evidence and could compromise environmental protection.
