Commission unveils EU air quality package

The European Commission’s launch of air quality plans marked the end of the ‘year of air’ and the beginning of negotiations on meeting existing standards and further emission cuts by 2030.

The EU will aim for full compliance with existing air quality standards by 2020 at the latest and will set targets to reduce pollution further up to 2030, the European Commission confirmed on 18 December.1

The new policy package on air quality was first debated at Green Week last June. As expected there will be no immediate changes to air quality standards (ENDS Report 465, p37).
