‘Water offsets’ on the horizon

The Swiss government and major drinks firms are supporting efforts to develop a standard for ‘water benefit certificates’. But it is proving harder to develop than expected.

Businesses may soon be able to buy ‘water benefit certificates’ as part of their corporate social responsibility actions to improve their water stewardship.

The Gold Standard certification body, based in Switzerland, is hoping to consult on a draft standard for the certificates this spring, allowing the concept to be piloted.

The move is unique but the body is facing many challenges to develop a robust standard. Issues range from what projects should come under the standard, to how firms can communicate certificate use.
