A new government growth strategy for the community energy sector wants to make local ownership of onshore wind and solar projects commonplace

The government predicts community solar, onshore wind and hydro projects could generate up to three gigawatts of renewable electricity by 2020.

Electricity generation on this scale would require a 45-fold increase in community-owned capacity over the next six years. Community renewable electricity capacity is currently about 66 megawatts in the UK, with at least another 200MW in development.
