Supermarkets promise to disclose food waste

UK supermarkets have agreed to reveal how much food they waste, as part of an updated sustainability plan from the British Retail Consortium

The UK’s major supermarkets have agreed to report on how much food they waste each year.

Asda, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, the Co-operative and Waitrose made the promise as part of the British Retail Consortium’s supermarket sector sustainability plan, ‘A Better Retailing Climate’, which was relaunched on 29 January.

A BRC statement said: “Supermarkets signed up to the initiative have committed to publish their data on food waste, along with annual progress reports. Signatories, which include all of the major grocery retailers, already provide data on waste in the supply chain to WRAP.”
