This year’s particularly hot summer has led to another spate of waste fires. The London Fire Brigade told ENDS it had been “another busy year”.
In June, the Environment Agency issued R Plevin & Sons with an enforcement notice, forbidding it from receiving any more waste wood at its £5m Hazlehead wood recovery plant. The site had suffered two fires during its commissioning period. Plevin was also required to prevent future run-off from entering nearby watercourses, after a nearby dyke was found full of dead brown trout and a high level of ammonia.
