EA grants Cuadrilla Lancashire shale exploration permits

Cuadrilla has been given permission to explore for shale gas at Preston New Road in Lancashire, with conditions on waste, water and fugitive emissions and monitoring

The Environment Agency (EA) has granted Cuadrilla permission to explore for shale gas at Preston New Road, in Plumpton, Lancashire.

The company was expected to receive environmental permits for the site after the EA signalled that it had no major concerns in November and opened a second consultation on the matter.

Cuadrilla intends to drill a 'J-shaped' well at Preston New Road, with an initial vertical pilot hole of up to 3,500m and a horizontal hole of up to 2,000m. A further three J-shaped wells will then be drilled without the initial vertical pilot hole.
