EPS focuses on coal’s emissions and fuel cycle

DECC emission performance standard regulations will cover new and upgraded fossil fuel power plants, but not indirect fossil fuel cycle emissions. New gas-fired plant and upgrades sit below the radar

Proposed regulations implementing an emissions performance standard (EPS) for fossil or gasified fuel power plants are to be adopted across the UK with only modest changes following DECC’s response to a September 2014 consultation. 

The regulations implement a provision requiring EPS in chapter 8, sections 57-60 of the Energy Act 2013 to limit carbon emissions from new fossil fuel power stations of 50 megawatts peak capacity. The EPS came into force in February of 2014.
