EfW operators divided on benefits of recovery designation

Just four operational incinerators in the UK have R1 status under energy efficiency rules set by the EU. The benefits of formal designation are unclear

Incineration is by default considered a disposal operation unless a plant passes an R1 assessment under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD). This is based on the type of waste burned, the equipment used and an energy efficiency threshold.
