Smart TVs must meet updated EU energy efficiency rules

Smart televisions, coffee machines and gas ovens are among the appliances affected by new energy efficiency measures

New EU energy efficiency rules require smart televisions to be able to switch themselves into standby mode when not in use.

The rules, which came into force on 1 January, apply to the sale of all new routers, hubs, modems, and televisions and printers connected to the internet.1 New coffee machines have to switch into a low-power standby mode after a certain amount of time.

Energy efficiency labels are also now compulsory for new domestic gas ovens and range hoods. Up until now, only electric ovens have been sold with such labels.
