Plans to change definition portable batteries

DEFRA and the devolved governments are consulting again on a clearer definition of portable batteries

The government is proposing to change the definition of portable batteries to boost recycling rates.

In a consultation, published on 26 January, DEFRA and the devolved governments aim to clarify how EU responsibility rules apply to UK battery producers and recyclers.

Batteries are currently considered portable if they can be carried by an average person by hand without difficulty. The consultation proposes changing this vague definition to a specific weight limit.
