Environmental consultants would like a more intelligent approach to EIAs, better dialogue with communities and a role for social licence to operate

The UK’s pipeline of massive infrastructure projects is testing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as never before – and demanding new ways of working. One thing the meeting did demonstrate, however, was the willingness of environmental consultants to adapt to changing circumstances and their readiness to offer up practical solutions.

How to ensure EIA is best-suited to big infrastructure projects remains an open question. But a shift to a more ‘intelligent’ approach to EIA is one answer, argues Mott MacDonald’s Allison.
