Planning permission to expand a hazardous waste landfill has been approved on the basis that its benefits outweigh the harmful impact on protected land

Electrical waste has upped the demand for hazardous waste treatment plantsThe communities secretary has approved the expansion of a hazardous waste landfill in West Lancashire, saying its benefits outweigh its impact on green belt land.

Greg Clark, who was recently appointed to lead the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), granted planning permission for an extension of Whitemoss in Skelmersdale in May (endsreport.com/48379). The decision followed a positive recommendation from the Planning Inspectorate after a six-month consultation in 2014 and a report by a panel of inspectors.
