There is growing concern among green businesses and other low-carbon stakeholders about a swathe of energy and climate policy reversals just months into the new government. These worries have intensified amid rumours of an “imminent” announcement on green energy funding.
The Telegraph and Daily Mail both claim tip-offs pointing to cuts aimed at tackling a likely overspend in 2020 of £1.5bn on energy subsidies. These are blamed on low fossil fuel prices, higher than expected output from offshore wind and rapid uptake of solar PV. The Daily Mail claims officials are working on a “big reset” of energy policy to emphasise lower cost “good quality green energy”.
