Stretched waste management budgets and a volatile resources market are painting a confused and inconsistent picture of treatment costs

Wide national variation in gate fees is making it difficult for councils to make sound waste management decisions.

Charity WRAP’s latest annual gate fees report shows the disparity in how much councils pay for dealing with recycling and treating residual waste.1

In 2014/15, UK councils paid a median materials recovery facility (MRF) gate fee of £6 per tonne, compared with £10/t in the previous years. MRF gate fees have fallen for several years, down from £15/t in 2011 (
