Operators must conduct loss on ignition testing

A loss on ignition test has been introduced to identify the weight of waste fines in a load qualifying for the lower rate of landfill tax

Operators are now required to carry out additional testing to ensure they are paying the correct amount of landfill tax.

A ‘loss on ignition’ test has been introduced to identify the weight of waste fines   – the smaller fractions of waste produced by mechanical waste treatment processes in a load.

Landfill operators pay the lower rate of landfill tax on these fines, which is currently £2.60 per tonne, compared with the £82.60/t higher rate.
