More high-risk sites identified by councils

Local authorities are marking down a larger proportion of industrial installations as high risk in terms of pollution control

More industrial installations regulated by councils are being assessed as high risk, according to the latest figures on local pollution control.

The Local Pollution Control Statistical Survey 2013/14 shows an increase in facilities moving up in the risk-assessment framework, especially those carrying out more complex activities.1

Councils in England and Wales are responsible for regulating smaller and less-polluting Part A2 or Part B industries under the Environmental Permitting Regulations 2010. They must assess their use of resources (including energy) and waste generation, as well as looking for the best environmental option for tackling them.
