NI introduces environmental regulation bill

An Environmental Better Regulation Bill aimed at improving Northern Ireland’s permitting regime has been laid before its assembly

A draft law to revamp Northern Ireland’s permitting regime has been published.

Environment minister Mark H Durkan introduced the first version of the Environmental Better Regulation Bill into the Northern Ireland Assembly in June.1

It aims to make environmental legislation simpler and lower regulatory burdens on businesses.

The Department of the Environment Northern Ireland (DOENI) consulted on proposals for an updated regulatory scheme in 2011 and 2013, but the actual bill has been delayed (endsreport.com/28599 and 39596).
