HMRC has set up a national waste industry taskforce as part of a cross-government push to curb waste crime.

Judith Kelly, deputy director of the environmental taxes team at HMRC, said the roll-out followed the success of a small-scale trial last winter.

“We have tried to think more creatively within HMRC,” she said. “We don’t have any landfill tax powers in this particular area as we can only charge waste that reaches registered landfill sites. Nonetheless, businesses that operate along the waste supply chain have a tax footprint with HMRC.”
