Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) should be changed to take into account impacts to ecosystem services, according to researchers.

A study conducted at the University of Montpellier found that unless a site is designated as protected, environmental concerns are considered secondary to economic ones when a project is being considered.1

Relegating ecosystem services in this way can result in substantial economic losses, it claims.
