MPs back calls for including aviation and shipping in carbon budgets

Pressure on the government to include aviation and shipping in carbon budgets has increased

The House of Commons Energy and Climate Committee has urged the government to include aviation and shipping in carbon budgets.

In a series of strongly worded letters the committee warns that the UK risks missing its target of cutting emissions by 80% by 2050 if it continues to exclude these sectors.

It backs up recommendations made in April by the advisory Committee on Climate Change, which said the UK’s existing carbon budgets should be increased to allow for emissions from both sectors (ENDS Report, April 2012).
