Commission plans to freeze EU ETS for foreign flights

The European Commission wants to exempt flights to and from Europe from the EU ETS for a year to give global talks a chance

AeroplaneInternational flights to and from Europe could be exempt from the EU emissions trading system (EU ETS) until autumn 2013 when UN talks on a global carbon reduction deal reach a head.

The European Commission wants to “stop the clock” on the inclusion of foreign airlines in the scheme to give the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) an opportunity to come to an agreement. The decision must now be endorsed by EU member states
