NZ says no to Kyoto 2 but Australia is ready to join

Australia is willing to join a second Kyoto commitment period, but that move will be tempered by New Zealand’s refusal

New Zealand's climate change minister Tim Groser announced on 9 November that his country will not sign up to a second commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol at the forthcoming international climate meeting in Doha.

The news emerged as his Australian counterpart, Greg Combet, confirmed he was ready to join a second commitment period if certain conditions were met.

"We have decided it is in New Zealand's best interest to… take our next [greenhouse gas emission reduction] commitment under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change rather than the Kyoto Protocol", said Mr Groser.
