Case pushed for linking CCS projects to oil recovery

A government taskforce has backed linking CCS and oil operations, just weeks after the government dumped the UK’s only such scheme

The quickest way to reduce the cost of carbon capture and storage (CCS) is to use the captured CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, a government-established taskforce said on 21 November.

The finding comes just weeks after the energy and climate department (DECC) decided not to fund the UK’s only CCS project to use the technology (ENDS Report, 31 October).

DECC said it would not provide a grant to 2CO Energy’s Don Valley scheme despite the European Commission rating it as Europe’s top project.
