EIA reforms could speed up planning

Radical EU proposals to reform environmental impact assessments would speed up the process, the European Commission says

Major planning applications would have to be decided in just three months if ambitious European Commission plans to speed up and improve environmental impact assessments (EIAs) are agreed.

The proposals would standardise the process for deciding when an EIA is needed and be more prescriptive on the range of impacts to be considered.

Planning authorities would be given deadlines to complete determinations and EIAs would have to be carried out or reviewed by accredited experts.
